What to do When Your House is Flooding

Having a flood can be a scary experience. It’s a dangerous situation that should not be taken lightly. While many people know what to do in the aftermath of a flood situation, most are not abreast of what to during the actual flood.

Your specific actions will be dependent on the situation. If there is a serious flood situation in the area, you should listen to the radio to find out the details of the situation and list to the emergency instructions of your local municipality. Follow all evacuation instructions and make you way to a save area until it is deemed okay to return to your home.

    : An important factor in stopping water from entering your home is to identify the source of your leak.

    : Only if it is safe to do so, take action to minimize the damage. Remove items that have yet to be damaged or can be saved. Remember that most of the items that have been exposed to water damage are a loss because of contamination and sewage and other pollutants that are in the water.

    : One of your first calls should be to a water damage restoration professional to assist you with the cleanup. These professionals will be able to eliminate the water from your home and make sure there is no sign of damage going forward.
  • Call your insurance company
    : Call your insurance company immediately. They will be able to provide you with further instructions and start your claim right away. Keep track of everything that was damaged during the flood so you will be able to include it in your paper work.
