Here are some of the most notable storms and flooding over the past 5 years:
- Burlington, ON Flood – August 2014
Highways were flooded, drivers were left stranded and homeowners had basement with water up to their knees when more than 2 months’ worth of rain fell during one thunderstorm.
- Toronto, ON Flood – July 2013
On record as the provinces most expensive natural disaster, the storm and flash flood cost more than $850 million in damage. The storm left more than 300, 000 people without power, flooding the Don Valley Parkway, stranding a Go Train, forcing many people to leave their vehicle and homeowners to call for help to remove the flood water from their homes.
- Wawa ON Flood – October 2012
With rain causing a creek to overflow, washing out portions of the TransCanada Highway, and flooding throughout the area, the town of Wawa in Northern Ontario was forced to declare a state of emergency.
- Goderich, ON Tornado – August 2011
This was one of the most devastating storms in recent memory. The F-3 level tornado ripped through the town with winds up to 300 kilometres per hour, killing 1, injuring at least 37 people, leaving many residents to pick up the pieces. With roofs ripped off, trees uprooted, overturned cars, and buildings completely destroyed, the town was forced to declare a state of emergency.
- Vaughan, ON Tornado – August 2009
Ripping roofs off homes and scattering debris everywhere, this storm left residents with millions of dollars in damage. On this day alone (August 20th) a total of 19 tornados touched down between Milton and North Bay.
